Environment and Land Use

A place where planning and the environment come together.

Learning to Bounce Back

Andrew Zolli, for the New York Times, writes about the challenges posed towards the idea of sustainability with the increase of weather that seemingly has thrown the world off-balance. Is the proposed idea of resilience more practical than sustainability? Should we just be continually planning on how buildings and we as people should weather storms, or should we focus on trying to restore the balance of the world? Could there be some medium ground to bring these two ideas together?

This article is a must-read for planners as an introduction for “resilience thinking”. This idea may become a movement for all urban planners when it comes to updating the infrastructure within cities that are prone to erratic weather or cities which are not prepared for unexpected shocks, much like New York City after Hurricane Sandy.
